OpenCode is an AI coding agent. You talk to it in a terminal interface, and it helps with development work such as reading code, planning changes and running commands. A desktop app is also available as a beta.

It ships with two built-in agents you switch between with the Tab key. The build agent has full access and is the default. The plan agent is read-only. It denies file edits by default and asks before running bash commands, which suits exploring code you don't know yet.

There is also a general subagent for complex searches and multistep tasks. OpenCode uses it internally, and you can call it with @general in a message. The README doesn't compare OpenCode with other coding agents. It leaves configuration, such as model providers, to the separate docs site.

## What it does

- **Build and plan agents**: Build is the default agent with full access for development work. Plan is read-only and asks permission before running bash commands. Press Tab to switch.
- **General subagent**: A helper for complex searches and multistep tasks. You can invoke it with @general in your messages.
- **Many ways to install**: Use an install script, npm, bun, pnpm, yarn, Homebrew, Scoop, Chocolatey, pacman, mise or nix. The script lets you choose the install directory.
- **Desktop app (beta)**: Downloads exist for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux (.deb, .rpm, .AppImage).

## What you could build

- Explore an unfamiliar codebase safely with the read-only plan agent.
- Plan a change to a project before letting an agent edit any files.
- Hand everyday development tasks to the build agent from your terminal.
- Delegate complex searches across a codebase to the general subagent.

## Who it's for

Developers who are comfortable in a terminal and want an open source coding agent. You should know how to install a CLI tool and, per the docs, configure it.

## Get started

Install it with the script or your preferred package manager, then run it inside a project folder. Start with the plan agent if you want to look around before allowing edits. Check the docs site for configuration.
