AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity decide which pages to cite. This list gathers writing and research on how they make that choice, so you can optimize content for them as well as for classic search.

It is a plain list of links, each with a long note on what the source found. The first sections cover how AI search works: reverse-engineered retrieval pipelines, grounding comparisons across vendors, and ad infrastructure. The next section covers research papers, including large citation experiments and brand-visibility audits.

The contents also list sections on content engineering, technical SEO, measurement, Reddit and off-page signals, agentic SEO, open source tools, people to follow and related lists. The README text provided cuts off partway through the Research section, so those later sections are not described here. Many early entries come from the maintainer's own company blog, so read them with that in mind.

## What it does

- **How AI search works**: Analyses of how ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini retrieve and cite content, plus Google's official AI Overviews documentation and the Perplexity API docs.
- **Research and papers**: Controlled experiments and audits on what drives citations, including a 252,000-trial study across six LLMs and large brand-visibility studies. Notes mention sample size and method.
- **Platform comparisons**: Side-by-side looks at how Google, OpenAI and Anthropic ground answers in web results, and how grounding can bias a model.
- **Ad infrastructure analyses**: Traffic-inspection write-ups on how ads and shopping work inside ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini.

## What you could build

- Read the retrieval analyses to understand why some pages get cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews and others do not.
- Use the research section to back up content decisions with experiments and audits rather than opinion.
- Compare how different AI search platforms ground and cite sources before planning a visibility strategy.
- Find Perplexity API docs to test citation behavior in your own scripts.
- Start a team reading list for moving from SEO to AEO.

## Who it's for

Engineers and growth marketers who already know basic SEO and want to learn how AI search engines choose sources.

## Get started

There is nothing to install. Open the README, start with the How AI Search Works section, then follow the links that match your work.
