Semrush and Ahrefs charge monthly fees for large suites that many people only partly use. OpenSEO is a smaller, focused alternative. It pulls its data from DataForSEO, and you pay that provider directly for what you use rather than paying a subscription.

You can run it yourself with Docker on your own machine, or on Cloudflare for team or internet-facing use. There is also a hosted version at $10/month. The README says the hosted service adds a 28% markup on DataForSEO requests, so self-hosting costs slightly less.

It also exposes an MCP server, so AI agents such as Claude Code, OpenClaw and Hermes can read your SEO data directly. Agent skills are reusable workflows that guide the agent through SEO tasks. You can write your own skills or fork the code to change the tool.

## What it does

- **Core SEO workflows**: Covers keyword research, rank tracking, competitor insights, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility in one interface.
- **MCP server for agents**: Lets agents like Claude Code, OpenClaw and Hermes query your SEO data directly.
- **Prebuilt agent skills**: Reusable workflows guide an agent through SEO tasks using the MCP server. You can build your own.
- **Pay-as-you-go data**: Bring your own DataForSEO API key and pay only for the requests you make, with no subscription.
- **Two self-hosting paths**: Run it with Docker for personal testing, or on Cloudflare (works on the free plan) for teams. Docs cover both.

## What you could build

- Research keywords and check competitor rankings without paying for a full SEO suite.
- Connect Claude Code to your SEO data and ask it to run audits or keyword analysis.
- Track how your site ranks for chosen keywords over time.
- Audit a website for technical SEO problems and review its backlinks.
- Fork the project and adapt it into a custom in-house SEO tool.

## Who it's for

Site owners, marketers and developers who want SEO data on a pay-per-use basis; you will need a DataForSEO API key and some comfort with Docker or Cloudflare to self-host.

## Get started

Get a DataForSEO API key, then follow the Docker guide (docs/SELF_HOSTING_DOCKER.md) to try it locally, or the Cloudflare guide for a shared setup. To use it with an agent, follow the MCP and Skills setup docs on openseo.so. You can also try the hosted version first.
