World Monitor puts many streams of world news and data on one screen. Instead of checking separate news sites, market tickers and tracking tools, you get feeds, maps and panels together. An AI layer condenses the news into short briefs.

The front end is vanilla TypeScript with Vite. It has two map views: a 3D globe built on globe.gl and a flat WebGL map built on deck.gl. The AI parts can call Ollama, Groq or OpenRouter, and some models run in the browser through Transformers.js. The README says everything can run locally on Ollama with no API keys.

One codebase produces several variants: world, tech, finance, commodity, happy and energy. It also ships a Tauri desktop app. For programs and agents, it offers an MCP server, a REST API, a CLI and client libraries for Python, Ruby and Go. The README does not name direct alternatives.

What it does

  • AI-synthesized news briefs

Curated global and regional news feeds are condensed into briefs by an AI model.

  • Two map engines

A 3D globe and a flat WebGL map share one catalog of map layers.

  • Country Instability Index

Shows live scores, bands and rough 24-hour movement for 31 Tier-1 countries.

  • Local AI option

Runs with Ollama and needs no API keys. Groq and OpenRouter are also supported.

  • Built for agents and scripts

Exposes an MCP server, a REST API with an OpenAPI spec, an npm CLI, and SDKs for Python, Ruby and Go.

What you could build

  • Track world events, markets and infrastructure from one dashboard.
  • Self-host a private monitoring site on Vercel, Docker or static hosting.
  • Connect an AI agent to global news and risk data through the MCP server.
  • Query country risk scores from scripts using the CLI or the Python, Ruby or Go SDKs.
  • Study a large TypeScript project that combines 3D maps, data feeds and LLM calls.

Get started

Clone the repo, install dependencies and start the dev server, then open localhost:3000. The app runs with no environment variables, though some data sources need credentials listed in .env.example.

git clone https://github.com/koala73/worldmonitor.git
cd worldmonitor
npm install

Commands are copied from the project's README. Read it on GitHub for the full setup.
