Claude Code works better when it has clear project rules and checks that always run. This kit supplies them ready-made: a CLAUDE.md with 11 numbered rules, slash commands for common jobs, hooks that run automatically, and skills that give Claude topic knowledge such as Docker, MongoDB or accessibility.

It is a scaffold, not an app. You install it into ~/.claude with npx, or clone it and use /new-project to generate a new project with the tooling copied in. You can also merge it into an existing project with /convert-project-to-starter-kit, which makes a safety commit first so you can undo it.

The kit supports two ways of working. In the classic way you drive with commands like /review and /commit. In the MDD way, now a separate npm package, Claude writes documentation and tests first and asks for your approval at each step.

## What it does

- **Hooks that always run**: Ten hooks block dangerous bash commands, enforce file-length limits, lint on save, protect the main branch, and check that no credentials are committed.
- **27 slash commands**: Includes /review, /commit, /create-api, /create-e2e, /security-check, /optimize-docker, /diagram and /setup. Eleven more manage the kit itself, such as /new-project and /update-project.
- **25 skills**: Context-aware guidance on code review, debugging, testing, API conventions, Docker, Node.js, NGINX, accessibility and web performance.
- **Live AI monitor**: /what-is-my-ai-doing shows tool calls, tokens, cost and rule violations as they happen. The free mode needs no API key and runs with pnpm ai:monitor.
- **Convert existing projects**: /convert-project-to-starter-kit merges the kit into a project you already have, keeping what is there, and makes a safety commit you can revert.

## What you could build

- Scaffold a new Claude Code project with security rules and hooks already in place.
- Add review, commit and testing commands to an existing codebase without losing its current setup.
- Block commits to main and catch committed secrets automatically while Claude edits code.
- Watch token use, cost and rule violations of a Claude Code session in a separate terminal.
- Fork the template to build your own team's commands, hooks and rules and publish them as an npm package.

## Who it's for

Developers who already use Claude Code and want a consistent, rule-driven setup; know basic CLI, npm and git first.

## Get started

Run the npx command once to install the commands, hooks and skills into ~/.claude. Then, inside Claude Code, run /new-project to create an app, cd into it, and run /setup to configure .env.

```
npx @claude-code-mastery/starter-kit init
```
```
/new-project my-app clean
```
```
/setup
```
